Odds and Sods, Bits and Bobs The smell, the scent of a solid wood drawer, the pungent aroma of steel and other metals that fill the openness or divided by compartment, When I was a boy I would ask me Grandad, have you got… before I could finish the sentence, go look in the odds and sods drawer or the tin slightly rusted tool box which sat not too far from the heavenly drawer of everything. Which would be contained in the universe of shed, the universe of shed emitted a faint smell of old cut grass, rusty tools, and oils for everything, even my Grandad’s creaky knees. Odds and sods the drawer with contents, That will fix the lot. Bits and bobs, the drawer to mend even hearts, When broke there’s tape for that. Rust on the fingers as we rummage, the fun starts, Granite hands we need for the sharps. Pull free one hand from treasure trove of parts. What’s deep in the nail bed, the tip of a drawing pins pointy point, We pull it out and dive back in. To only find something wet and sticky the leaky glue bottle, Alas I found it after what seemed like days of searching, It was only a button I needed for me bestest shirt, The odds and sods are always my first port of call. Who would have thought that vinyl would come back big time! So what is the difference between a single record and a LP?
The most common form of the vinyl single is the 45 or 7-inch. The names are derived from its play speed, 45 rpm, and the standard diameter, 7 inches (18 cm).The 7-inch 45 rpm record was released 31 March 1949 by RCA Victor as a smaller, more durable and higher-fidelity replacement for the 78 RPM shellac discs. The first 45 rpm records were monural, with recordings on both sides of the disc.
Terms such as “long-play” (LP) and “extended-play” (EP) describe multi-track records that play much longer than the single-item-per-side records, which typically do not go much past four minutes per side. An LP can play for up to 30 minutes per side, though most played for about 22 minutes per side, bringing the total playing time of a typical LP recording to about forty-five minutes. Many pre-1952 LPs, however, played for about 15 minutes per side.
However, at the end of the day , what can be more entertaining than listening to the ‘crackle’ of an old vintage record!
We often wish we had learned more about our families past and recorded these precious memories for our future families to read and learn about. Documenting our life stories is something that we all must do and the earlier we start to do this the better. That way we will have our memories recorded before they fade. For people with dementia, it is best to do this as soon as possible and will make an enjoyable activity to do together.
The ‘This Is My Life’ memory and story book is ideal for documenting life stories from childhood memories to present day and future wishes. The activity of completing the book can be an enjoyable experience whilst the end result can be used to start meaningful conversations with the individual.
