Wearing a face covering lowers the risk of spreading Covid-19 to others through speaking and coughing, new research suggests. Speaking and coughing without face protection exposes people nearby to droplets carrying the virus that could otherwise be stopped by wearing a mask, according to the study. Researchers found someone standing two metres from a coughing person with no mask is exposed to 10,000 times more droplets than someone half a metre from someone coughing and wearing a covering. ‘Therefore, wearing a face mask can really make a difference’ and we have a duty to protect other people as well ourselves.
Although Mindful Gifts CIC specialises in gift ideas and activities for people with dementia, we actually offer a lot more! Our shop that is set in the past brings back memories for people with dementia. However, set in the past also means vintage and nostalgic and that is interesting to everyone. When local filmakers wanted to shoot scenes for their 1970s film , we were more than happy to step in and offer our living room where customers normally have tea and cakes. We have loaned out items before for theatres so for films is just the next progressive step for us. Better still when we were asked to be extras in the film, it was anothe rstring to our bow.
We’ve put on Peaky Blinders and Titanic events before, so our costume wardrobe and props is really growing now. So how does all of this fit in with activities for people with dementia? Well ‘reminiscence’ and fun is the key factor. Remembering the past in different ways is beneficial to people with dementia and how you do that can be fun and very enjoyable!
A year ago, Noddy Holder declared open our Rewind Shop @ Mindful Gifts CIC in Darlaston. We are proud of what we have achieved in a year. Many customers visited to browse through our vinyl records section. We had visitors come from all over the country for the vintage furniture we had restored. Our retro shop window caught passers-by eyes as they went past and put a smile on their face. We had people with dementia visit with their families. We enabled people to go ‘into the zone’ as they looked for their favourite music. We enabled more people to volunteer for us. Rewind has been wonderful; however, we have now closed our doors due to the lease coming to an end. The good news is we have a mini Rewind section in our Mindful Gifts CIC shop. Not as much vinyl LPs but a good range of CDs, DVDs, cassettes, vinyl singles and games. Thank you to all the customers and volunteers that supported us and hope to see you all again! www.mindfulgifts.co.uk
