We created the book due to our ‘This is My Life’ book being really successful and people wanted a version that they give to someone as a gift for a special occasion.
As a ‘not for profit’ organisation and surplus we do make on each sale of the book is reinvested to support the good work we do for people with dementia and older people.
Making your ‘gift of giving’ going wider than the person you are giving the ‘Big Red Book’ to! support us
This book was created using the founder of Mindful Gifts CIC ( Vicki Phipps) mothers poems she had written about what wash days used to be like.
When Vicki read the poems, she could picture what it used to be like before we had washing machines, tumble dryers and electric irons. She thought the poems matched with appropriate images would make an ideal reminiscence tool for those who could relate to what washdays used to be like. The book has been purchased by libraries, as well as care homes and hospitals across the country. Vicki suggests to use the book with a bar of carbolic soap, some dolly pegs and Reckitts Blue (Dolly Blue) as these helps to stimulate the different senses which provoke different memories. All of which are available from Mindful Gifts CIC. support us
we are based in a real shop where you can visit and get advice about the range of activities we have available and the suitability for your specific needs. As a ‘not for profit’ organisation we keep our prices as low as possible and reinvest any surplus to support us to do the great work we do for people with dementia. This includes delivering daily activities, tea parties, giving talks in the community, and providing a unique shop that is set in the past that can be accessed in order to bring back memories.
that we are mainly run by volunteers some of who face barriers to gaining employment. This includes people with mental health issues, physical disabilities, learning disabilities and carers. Our shop provides a welcoming learning base that enables our volunteers to try out new things, learn new skills, increase knowledge and gain confidence. As our shop is very unique in what we do, our volunteers can learn about dementia, as well as a career in retail or hospitality.
Our Vintage Tea Parties take place in our 1950s living room and scullery where you will be served a selection of finger sandwiches, cakes and loose leaf tea. Our tea parties are available to everyone from young to old and you can listen to your favourite music whilst you enjoy your tea served out of the best china!
Did you know that we deliver our tea parties for care homes, Ring and Ride and community groups . We have had pleasure on seeing peoples eyes light up ,
Our volunteers are trained to lay the tables, prepare the tea parties and look after the customers.
We thought of the idea of doing the aprons when our customers kept asking us if we did wraparound aprons like their mother or granny used to wear. We designed the aprons with the help of the local community and asked for feedback to make sure they were just like the ones in the old days. When we had the thumbs up, we arranged for the aprons to be made locally, one mile from where our shop is, and our volunteers pack and dispatch each one. support us
We also decorate and furnish venues with household items that will stimulate memories. For instance, we have transformed a art gallery into a 1960s living room and a hospital as had a 1950s living room that patients and relatives can use to make their visits more enjoyable
